The Differences Between Long Distance and Local Moves

Last updated 2 years ago

Nothing is more exciting than turning a new house into a home! There may be a number of important details to keep in mind before, during, and after a move, but that shouldn’t stop it from being a fun and enjoyable process. Here at Hollander International, we work hard to make your move as easy and stress-free as possible. Whether you’re planning a local move or a long distance move, we can help you take care of everything. Here’s a closer look at the major differences between long distance and local moves:

  • Local moves typically involve traveling a short distance between the old home and new home. If your new home is fewer than 50 miles from your old home and is located in the same state, you’ll be planning a local move. If your new home is more than 50 miles from your old home, but is still located in the same state, you’ll be planning an intrastate move.  If you’re moving across state lines, you’ll be planning a long distance, interstate move.

  • Different types of moves have different prices. Local moving services typically charge based on the size of the moving crew that must be used and how long the crew will spend moving your goods. The fewer rooms you have in your home and the more organized that you are, the fewer hours will you’ll need.  Additionally, having larger pieces of furniture dissembled ahead of move day will help you save on the hourly rates.  Just keep in mind that anything that you dissemble you will need to reassemble upon delivery.   For long distance moves, your final price will depend on the total weight of your shipment and the distance to your new home.

  • Long distance moves require more planning time. When moving to a new state, it’s important to understand how much work and planning will be involved. Local moves don’t call for major changes, but long distance moves require you to find new physicians, stores, schools, and other necessary service providers in your new neighborhood. Because of this, it’s important to start planning and gathering records earlier when preparing for a long distance move.
